In our house we have quite the problem of a certain two-year old that draws on all things NOT paper. Ugh. Every time I turn around she has a pen or colored pencil and is drawing on the wall, her leg, the window, her toys…you name it. No matter how many times I tell her no or how sneakily I hide drawing devices, she always seems to find one.
The Mess
I discovered that she really loves markers, but I just can NOT deal with the mess of markers and her drawing on all the things. I can deal with colored pencils, crayon and pen a lot better than marker mess. My kids were playing with a neighbor outside and he brought out all his markers. Baby girl was so excited. I literally had to sit there and watch over her like hawk! One moment my daughter is coloring peacefully and the next she’s somehow drawing on the table or her arm.
The Solution
The kids and I went to a craft store. I was looking for activities where I wouldn’t be cleaning up sparkles or tiny paper bits for months. Then I saw them…Color Wonder! My aunt is the first person I know who had these. She had an avid collection of Color Wonder coloring books and markers when my cousin and sister were little.
The biggest reason…the markers don’t color on anything other than the special coloring books. YAAASSS! Right then and there we bought our first Color Wonder marker and coloring book set.
Baby girl was thrilled! She literally sat for an hour and colored…quietly. I have never seen her sit so still (while not causing trouble). I instantly felt very good about this purchase. It’s the little things people! From there we broadened our collection and I add to it every so often. If you are looking for a mess-free way to channel your kids creativity, this it it. They have a ton of character coloring books to choose from. So far, my kids favorites are Moana and Paw Patrol.
I hope this helps some of your kid-mess load. Let us know your favorite mess-free and budget friendly at-home activities for kids.
