How to Get What You Want for Mother’s Day

mother's day gifts

Tip for a Happy Mother’s Day:

Every couple has their own “gifting style”. I really like ours! For my husband and I, we don’t leave much room for thoughtfulness and creativity when it comes to gifts: we just say what we’d like for a particular occasion, and then we get it! Often, the best gifts aren’t even “things”, but having a listening ear and helping the giftee accomplish a goal of some kind. Sometimes that goal is more sleep or time spent together. These are meaningful gifts but don’t cost anything.

Whatever your goals are, the secret to getting what you want for any holiday is by directly ASKING!

Talk to your spouse about what you’d like to have happen for your day, then make it happen! We don’t mess with surprises in our home. I know I’m not alone saying this, but the element of surprise often times is set-up for stress, and sometimes disappointment. So- call us unromantic, but we celebrate the gift-giving occasions on the same page! For the record, this has been our gifting theme for most of our eight-and-a-half years of married life:

  • Valentines: Josh gets me roses from Costco- which I love- and we go on a special date: planned together.
  • Birthdays: I like to plan a day “off” of being mom and go do something fun on my own.
  • Anniversary: No gifts. We usually try to plan something big (like a cool hike or an overnight stay) and sometimes (ahem… rarely)  this actually happens! We do go on regular dates though so I can’t complain 🙂
  • Mothers Day and Fathers Day: Sweet gestures: breakfast, give a massage, etc. ANNNND We use these holidays as an excuse to buy something we want too!
Here are some great ideas that are perfect for a Mother’s Day gift to yourself! I know they are all on my list this year! Now to narrow down this list…
