Children growing up is inevitable, but do they have to grow up so quickly? It seems like a child transitions from a crib to a big kid bed in months and their tastes in color and style changes with them. As soon I have their room decorated, they suddenly need a big-kid room with big kid decorations. Good gravy! Where do you find the motivation and ideas for this change? May I suggest three easy steps: Viewing Pinterest, touring several open houses or Parade of Homes and lastly- looking over items you already own and re-purposing them.
Collecting ideas from Pinterest
Pinterest is a fantastic database of ideas and can help you find the motivation for the room you are trying to update. If you don’t have a Pinterest account- I’m not sure how you find last minute dinner solutions or decorating examples for a certain room. (Shameless plug **Mommyconvos actually has their own Pinterest account- if you aren’t already following us- give us a follow here.) Believe me, Pinterest is the fix-all to many problems you may encounter in your home. Pinterest is a fantastic place to see your dreams and vision come to fruition through someone else’s mistakes and findings. The illusion of doing anything because someone else has accomplished that project- is certainly appealing. On-looker beware- that perfect Pinterest image may not be as easy or inexpensive as it’s perceived on your small screen. So, I suggest when looking for motivation and ideas for updating a room- collect your ideas from Pinterest.
Physically Seeing a Project with an Open House
Secondly, see the project come to life- in someone else’ home. I am a visual person, I have a very difficult time seeing what the finished project will look like without actually seeing it. Yes, I drive my husband nuts with him explaining to me how he would put a room together all before I can financially commit to the project. Hence, the reason attending an open house or Parade of Homes is such a beneficial outing for someone who is visually geared by my decisions.
Where I live in Southern Utah- Saint George is known for one of their biggest winter events called, “Parade of Homes”. This is where builders and designers come together to showcase the beautiful, expensive and unique Saint George homes all in a period of time of open houses. Guests travel throughout the cities touring these beautiful homes of of Saint George they likely would never visit otherwise. The sites and the creativity of each project inside a home just oozes with motivation to update a room in your home.
Two Reasons You Should Attend an Open House or Parade of Homes:
1.) Let the dreaming begin!
Seeing multi-million dollar homes up close is intriguing. Last year when I toured the homes, there were several-million dollar homes that were amazing! To see our post on the Parade of Homes last year head here! Jennica took the most beautiful pictures of her favorite homes. in some of these homes I agreed with all of the “necessary” expenses and upgrades because they were phenomenal! There was a home with the most beautiful library that had a secret passage way entrance! Ummm yes! In other homes, I couldn’t believe the price tag because the style of the home was too simple to justify the price in my eyes. After touring homes all weekend, I came home wondering if I had the cash if I would spend my money accordingly or blow it all on the dream crafter’s room! (All the heart-eyes!) When touring a Parade home the viewer is able to dream without financially committing. And seeing the success of other’s dream homes and start writing their own list of dream home features.
2.) Seeing a project finished without the headache.
I cannot see a project until it’s set in front of me. So committing to updating a wall let-alone an entire room is WAY out of my comfort zone. Where does one even start? The beauty of touring a Parade of Homes is the rooms are usually present simply. Yes, there are intricate details in every corner of these homes, but as a viewer completely overwhelmed by a project I can walk through a room- appreciate it’s beauty and take mental notes on the little things that were appealing to me. Don’t forget to take pictures of a room or idea that seems obtainable in your home! Touring a Parade Homes can motivate and inspire you to update a room or rooms in your home. If nothing else- you had a change of pace and got out of your house!
Lastly, DIY the Inexpensive Way with Re-purposing Your Own Things
You’ve collected ideas on Pinterest, seen first hand what a finished project looks like by going to a Parade of Home and now- it’s time to act! If you have a project budgeted and unlimited funds- this last part is the easiest to accomplish. If you are not as lucky- now is the time to make those projects come to life on a cheap budget. Start with the items you already have! How can you re purpose items to fit your new vision? Each time we have moved, I’ve placed un-hung pictures in a bin in the garage. So, when it’s time to redecorate- this is the first place I look. The second place I look- the local donation store to re purpose something someone else donated.
Last summer, I won from the local furniture store a queen bed and box spring! Such a surprise. My husband and I decided to give the mattress to my seven year-old daughter and double her room as a guest room when company came. Now I faced the prospect of updating her room from her toddler preferences to a updated big girl room. (Insert sobbing here).
How We Updated a Room
The headboard came from the local donation store, my husband made the foot board and railings and I started thinking about the blank wall. We repainted the shelf we found in the garage, found two saying frames at Hobby Lobby here. We kept the other two pink picture frames from her room before.
Then, my husband sanded the dresser I painted for my daughter when I was pregnant with her and painted the dresser white to fit with the big girl room theme.
Splashes of gold, unicorn pillows unicorn stuffed animals may not be “big girl” material- but I have to hold onto my little girl in some way right? If your daughter loves unicorns like mine- this adorable pink stuffed animal can be found here. And if you haven’t read this book to your daughter about Unicorns… you need to own it also. Check it out here.
Printing off new pictures is such a nightmare. But, I finally found a few pictures to print off and display of my big girl for her wall. It’s crazy how quick time has passed. I swear it was just just yesterday when my daughter was that one-year old in the lemon dress. Sigh… Although it’s hard to update a room, I am thrilled with how this “big-girl” room turned out.
Updating a room might be a a fun hobby, or a terrible idea- depending on your style. But if you use Pinterest, attend a Parade of Homes and then look at the items you already own- the motivation and inspiration to update a room could be yours! Don’t forget to take before and after pictures of the room you choose to update, post it and tag Mommyconvos! We would love to see your creations!
