Decades ago, when I was back in college… ok ok, not quite decades, but a decade ago my mom underwent a series of challenges. My dad found out he had prostate cancer and needed a big surgery around the same time we discovered my younger brothers were abusing prescription drugs. I remember spending time with my mom through this challenging period. Initially she just shut down, becoming apathetic and depressed. If you know my mom, she is generally quite cheerful, bubbly, and very fun to be around- so this was quite odd. To be honest, the hardest part of these experiences, for me personally, was to see my mom in so much pain and turmoil.
After a while, my mother started attending classes on parenting addicts and avoiding enabling behaviors among other things; slowly and consistently I noticed my mom gain strength. Her vibe started shifting from that of apathy and fear to courage and hope! Eventually she seemed happy again and actually became a much stronger person than I knew growing up! Want to know her secret? Then read on …
Ever wonder why we use the term vibe? For example, when someone says, “He had a good vibe about him” or “There was a weird vibe in that restaurant, let’s go somewhere else.” In the book, Power Vs. Force by Dr. David Hawkins, he lays out a scale of emotional vibration (pictured above) and carefully calibrates the vibrations of specific emotions. Check out pages 59-61 of his book if you are interested in learning the “how” behind Dr. Hawkin’s pairing method, it is quite fascinating. So basically whatever emotional state you are in emits a vibe to others around you! Pretty cool right!
Let’s take a deeper look… Thanks to Einstein, we know that everything, even solid matter, is actually vibrating energy. The chair you’re sitting on right now is a constantly vibrating illusion, but the electromagnetic fields inside of the atoms in the chair repel similar fields in your body, allowing you to sit on it without falling through!
If you’re like me and you haven’t been to a science class in a while- no need to worry, here’s a quick refresher! Inside each atom there are protons, neutrons and electrons. When an atom is broken down (like Alexander Green does in his book, “An Embarrassment of Riches”) we learn, “If the nucleus of an atom were the size of a golf ball, the outermost electrons would be two miles away. Like galaxies, atoms are essentially cathedrals of empty space.” Now I can hear you saying, “Wait, two miles away!? What is filling up all of that empty space!?” Well, according to Einstein’s widely accepted theory of relativity, that empty space is: energy, life force, spirit, chi, or whatever you want to call it.
Feel like you passed your refresher course? Sweet- now back to the vibrating emotions chart…
Notice the words that are associated with the higher vibrations. Dr. Hawkins believes that when a person surrounds their life using higher vibrations, the more capable a person is of continuing to create and invite beautiful and new experiences into their life! I love how Hawkins says on page 93 of his book, Power Vs. Force, “As one advances in the evolution of his own consciousness, the process becomes self-perpetuating and self-correcting so that self-improvement becomes a way of life.” Like I mentioned earlier with my mom, she continually seemed to be on this track of self-improvement and growth and changed for the better…
I don’t know about you- but seeing this chart and hearing the possible results of living in a more consistently peaceful state sounds pretty awesome to me! I definitely want to stay in the vibrations of love, enthusiasm, belief, joy, gratitude and avoid the lower vibrations of shame, insecurity, apathy and depression, don’t you? If your answer is unsure, consider for a moment what vibration you want your children to be surrounded by on a day to day basis-a positive and uplifting one right? So don’t you want that for yourself too? Exciting things to think about!
This principle of “Elevating your Vibe” might feel super overwhelming or even strange at first. However, anything that will improve your life and your lifestyle is always worth working for. My friend and roommate once said, “Make the inevitable great” referring to having a comfortable bed. She was implying that if you have to sleep every night, make it great sleep! It’s inevitable that we will emit some type of vibe on a daily basis, why not shoot for an elevated vibe!?
Practice Makes Perfect-
Changing the way you think about these emotions and life experiences can be hard at first, but will gradually get easier, and the best part? You will be creating more joy not only for yourself, but for those around you, and that’s not just anyone- the people you love most and influence in a very BIG way!
Just like my mom uplifted and inspired me by taking back the control in her life, she taught me that it didn’t matter what was happening in my life. I have a choice on how to view those things and not let them take control of me. Taking control of your life and learning how to more fully choose our emotional state is a process and a journey. But let’s take that journey together, one little baby step at a time.
In our Elevate Your Vibe series we’ll discuss this chart thoroughly starting from the bottom of the chart with shame and guilt, and slowly work our way up to love and above. I will issue simple challenges to help you achieve your best possible vibe every day, and if you do those challenges I promise you will notice a change quickly! I hope you are as excited as I am!
Watch for the next part (in our 10-part series) that is full of tips on how to elevate yourself out of shame and guilt! You won’t want to miss it.
