Living in California means my kids and I frequent the beach often. We’ve gone to the beach many times over the last two years and we’ve come up with some go-to’s when visiting the beach. Summer is here so whether you live close to the beach or plan to visit- I have a list of your must-haves to make your outing a little easier.
1. Snacks, Snacks, Snacks
My kids are always hungry in general, but it seems like outdoor outings, especially to the beach, require snacks-galore. Depending on the time of day, I pack a lunch and snacks or just snacks. My go-to’s for beach snacks are: granola bars, fruit, jerkey, fruit leather, and pretty much anything that is easy to grab and throw in our bag.
It’s always a great idea to bring water to any outing, but to the beach is especially a good idea. The beach we frequent the most is quite a walk from our car and there are no drinking fountains close by. It’s usually hot and there is a lot of physical activity at the beach, so water is a must!
3. Picnic Blanket Bag
Our picnic blanket it one of my favorite purchases I have made as a mom. I love it so much I wrote about it here. It stays in back of our car and I use it all the time. I use it for soccer games, picnics, park dates, and of course the beach. It’s so convenient because it has a shoulder strap and it zips up ever so nicely.
4. Sand Toys For the Win!
We purchased a sand toy set from Costco thy comes with basically every toy you need for the beach and it is my kids favorite. I stick them in our giant beach bag and the kids are entertained for hours!
It seems like a no brainer, but I have to mention that sunscreen is a must at the beach. I like to keep a bottle in our beach bag to make sure I don’t forget.
6. Baby Wipes? Yes Please!
Without fail, someone inevitably ends up getting sand in their mouths or on hands and feet. I go through so many baby wipes for sandy kiddos. I always make sure to pack some in our beach bag.
7. Beach Bag!!
I recently found a beach bag on Amazon that is amazing. The top is big enough to hold sand toys, towels, sunscreen and some snacks. And the bottom compartment is a cooler so it can store fruit and water and keep them cool. I was stoked to find an all-in-one bag so I’m sharing with my faves here!
-Lightweight Beach Tent: Morgan wrote about it here. We love ours, but I usually only bring it if I know we are going to be at the beach for a long stent of time.
-Sun Hats: I like putting hats on my kids for protection from sun and sand. My kids’ hair takes forever to get the sand out so a lot of times I like to cover their heads to avoid the sand in the hair all together. We love this 2-pack.
-Sand Shoes: the beach sand gets hot in the summer. Flip flops can get annoying so sand shoes or sand socks can be super helpful.
-Beach Towel: we are probably not the norm, but a lot of times when we go to the beach, my kids don’t even get in the water or they will just put their feet in. The ocean water is cold in California for a lot of the year so we mostly go to play in the sand and enjoy watching surfers and dolphins. If I know we are getting in the water I pack a towel (here is my favorite-it is big but folds up super compact). If I know we aren’t, I usually don’t pack it.
We love going to the beach and are so grateful to be so close to it. I hope others get to enjoy it as much as we do! Let me know if you discover or have any others must-haves in the comments below!
