Each month our neighborhood’s church group celebrates the women’s birthdays by gathering at a home for a birthday breakfast and I am on the committee to help and have the opportunity to go. One particular month, I was squeezing this responsibility in along with a big to-do list and was dragging my feet to go a little. However, visiting with women of all ages and backgrounds ended up being such a pleasure.
We have a tradition to go around the table and tell a little about ourselves, and when it was my turn- my heart pounded and I got nervous announcing to these ten women that I was working hard on this blog! Everyone was so supportive and it was fun to get to know all kinds of insights and information about each of the other women. Dorothy, who was turning 93 years old, still travels and is a social butterfly, mentioned to me how she became an avid writer later in life. After breakfast, Dorothy thought of this “story” she’d written that might well resonate with our readers here. She admits she doesn’t really know much about blogs, but sent this story to me. Our editor and I thought Dorothy’s writings are perfect. I know its theme has been helpful to me these last few days!
This was beautifully written on a typewriter in 1984 and it’s authenticity drives the point of “motherhood pressure” even further. I can imagine the pressure she mentions to “prove yourself” outside of the home has multiplied exponentially as our generation of women are exposed to so much on social media etc. I LOVE Dorothy’s perspective that we have so. much. time. in our lifetime to pursue all kinds of passions and we don’t need to steal joy from the current stage by trying to squeeze everything in all at once. Enjoy this very simple stage of raising your little ones and know there will be decades to enjoy other things when your kids are grown! Great advice for me. I hope you enjoy it too!
Thank you Dorothy for such profound advice! It was so fun coming over to take some photos with you and visit! Now let’s be honest, the likely-hood of Dorothy getting on this blog and reading this part might not be too great- but I just would like to record what a neat experience it was for me and my kids to come and visit her last night. Dorothy is a joy to be around and I was glad she agreed to let us come do a little photo shoot with just a few minutes notice!
